There was nothing extraordinary about the Yustman's, not that was immediately noticeable anyway. Marcus and Sierra met in college and dated for two years before getting married. As a doctor Marcus provided a good living though Sierra was determined to continue working as a substitute teacher until she became pregnant for the first time. After Thaddeus was born Sierra decided to stay home, wanting to focus on being a mother and taking advantage of her ability to. A few years later they welcomed their second child, Satiana. From the beginning it was obvious that she and her brother couldn't have been more different. While he was serious and quiet she had to constantly be told to settle down and use her inside voice. A bundle of energy, it wasn't unusual to find her running around the house and putting her vibrant imagination to good use.

Things took a devastating turn when, a few months after Satiana's sixth birthday, her mother went in for a routine mammogram and an abnormality was found. A little over four weeks later she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. As a child Satiana wasn't fully aware of what had changed but it wasn't difficult for her to pick up on the shift in the household, from the way her father seemed to pay extra attention to her mother to the way her brother began to take on more roles, such as looking after her, to the way her mother began to get tired and sick as time went on. Something was wrong and there was nothing she could do about it. So, in an attempt to be good and not a problem she began putting on shows to entertain her mother when she wasn't feeling very well. It allowed her to play in a way that wasn't bothersome and didn't get her into trouble. A little over a year after her diagnosis Sierra passed away and Satiana still remembers her mother's funeral as the first time she realized her father wasn't untouchable after seeing him completely crumble, her aunt staying with them for a week and constantly telling her to hush up so that she didn't bother him. It was also the first time that Satiana remembers making a conscious decision to be more grown up, taking comfort in films and books as a way to entertain herself.

Eventually the family found a new routine. Despite her love of reading Satiana never liked school much and detested math. Participating in local theater productions, however, was a joy of hers. It was also how she heard about an open call for children around her age for several possible television shows. After much pleading and a flood of tears her father begrudgingly agreed to take her, both unaware of just what they were getting themselves into. It turned into a crazy day that would change the rest of their lives. Great interest was expressed in her talent and after being advised to find her an agent, she was given a call back date to read for the lead role of a television show. Two more auditions later and Satiana landed the role of Addie Singer in a show being developed called Unfabulous. With a prayer that he was doing the right thing Marcus packed up his children and moved the family to Los Angeles.

The time on set was like a dream come true. Due to her work schedule a tutor was hired to homeschool her and she graduated high school with decent grades and no intention to continue her education, much to her father's dismay. Thaddeus did help to take some of the heat from her when he announced that he intended to pursue a career in the medical field like their father. No, Satiana had her sights set on a career in acting and there was nothing that was going to stop her. Once Unfaboulous ended she spent some time pounding the pavement and auditioning for any role she could. Fortune favored her when she landed the role of Stephanie in The Wrestler, a break she still credits for kickstarting her career in film. Transitioning from a young teen on a show into the more serious film aspect of the industry wasn't exactly easy but she was a hard worker and took the craft seriously, something that helped to impress her older co-stars and began to build a solid foundation of respect.

Satiana's big break and the role that garnered her the most attention to date was when she was cast as Raven in X-Men: First Class, committing to multiple sequals with little hesitation and finding that she fell in love with the character and the world of mutants. The paycheck and sense of job security also allowed her to begin worrying less when it came to choosing roles. Now she could choose roles that might not be expected of her or roles that were just for fun. In the process she found that she greatly enjoyed voice acting. It didn't hurt that she could show up to work in pajamas and there was no early call time for two hours in a hair and make-up trailer. At this point there seems to be nothing in the way from her star continuing to rise.
